AFSCME leadership hopes to improve relationship with USM, UMD after strained summer

AFSCME Local 1072 president Amanda Dykema said union members and the university system align in many “higher-level goals,” such as conducting important research and educating the next generation. But, she said, sometimes the two disagree on how to get there.
“Where there is sometimes a question is when university or USM decision makers forget the role of staff in accomplishing those goals,” Dykema said. “Our union exists to make sure that the rights of staff are preserved and expanded, and that the voice of staff is heard in major decisions and in the day-to-day work of the university.”
